Evaluation and Research

New York University's Steinhardt Institute for Education and Social Policy will investigate the program’s impact on the preparation of 7th-12th grade Earth Science teachers for low-performing, high-needs schools. Specifically, the assessment seeks to answer the following: How do students taught by first year AMNH MAT graduates do academically in comparison with students taught by first year Earth Science teachers not prepared in this program? We predict that teachers educated in this program will be better prepared to teach Earth Science than other newly certified Earth Science teachers in similar settings and prepared through other programs, and that this preparation will lead to increased student achievement, as measured by the 8th grade Intermediate Level Science exam and high school level New York State Earth Science Regents exam, during their first year of teaching.

The Center for Education Policy, Applied Research and Evaluation at the University of Southern Maine, under Director David Silvernail, will conduct both the formative and summative evaluation of all program components, using a logic model recommended by the NSF evaluation framework. The formative evaluation will collect information on the program components, and provide timely feedback for improvement throughout its development and implementation. Using the logic model recommended by the NSF, Dr. Silvernail will follow the progression and, in the summative, will determine if the research findings are supported by the available evidence.
